Erica Tanov Fall 2011

When it comes to shopping, I would much rather buy one lovely amazing item I adore a few times per year, than to buy a number of (perhaps cheaper) things that I won't want to wear five years on. I call it investment shopping. When I was younger and lived in the bay area, I made a point of repeatedly visiting Erica Tanov's store on Fourth street to finely gauge what precious garment I would invest in. Those pieces, ten years later, I still wear, I still love. I was just as much in love with her then as I am now, and this video might help you understand why.

Tape.

(from my 2004 Spain journal)

(from Erica Tanov)

I love photo collages
because I love tape.

U N D E C O R A T E

It all goes back to when I was a little girl. I loved drawing elaborate, decorated floor plans. If only I could get my hands on some of those! I knew exactly how I wanted rooms to look. I arranged and dusted my McDonald's toys weekly. I created an entire barbie village from cardboard boxes, wallpaper scraps, shoe boxes, fabric - garbage essentially. Life was all aesthetics. Some things never change.

Erica Tanov's Style.

Sparse & Heavy.
I love everything, every thing,
in Erica Tanov's store.
I really appreciate the quality
and consistency of her taste.
I usually go to her store on Fourth Street in Berkeley.
But she also has stores in NYC
and SF. The photos from her home
are a terrific reflection of Tanov's
style.
